If you watched The Office last night you saw Dwight trade a thumb tack for a used candle which he traded for a collection of books and then for pesto, etc… he (almost) ended up with a telescope until Jim enticed him with ‘Magic Legumes’. Dwight made the trades convincing his associates they needed the item he possessed, a kind of one mans junk is another mans treasure concept. Anyway as soon as my husband saw the barter start, he said, “this is exactly like the one red paperclip.” I had no idea what he was talking about so today I looked it up.
Did you know that 1 man by the name of Kyle MacDonald, a Canadian blogger, traded a red paper clip for a house? Well, not exactly there were a few trades in between over the course of a year but in the end he ended up with a house in Kipling, Saskatchewan (Canada). WOW! I am impressed. Kyle MacDonald came up with an idea and made it happen. Undoubtedly he had some help from individuals around the world that were invested in his success, scratch that, they were invested in what he had to trade. The moral to this story is that if we can offer, develop, sell, invent, trade something that others are interested in then they (said others) will do just about anything to get it.
Here is a list of Kyle’s year long trades in sequential order-
.) One red paper clip
.) One fish pen
.) One doorknob
.) One Coleman stove
.) One red generator
.) One instant party- a beer keg, a Budweiser neon sign, and an I.O.U. for a keg’s worth of beer
.) One famous skidoo
.) One trip to Yahk
.) One cube van
.) One recording contract
.) One year in Phoenix
.) One afternoon with Alice Cooper
.) One KISS snow globe
.) One movie role
.) HOUSE- 503 Main Street
