Our Lady of Guadalupe is surfing in this 10’ stained glass mosaic.  The mural is affixed to the wall of the train overpass on Encinitas Blvd., just east of Hwy 101.  It is eye catching not only because of the people standing in the street taking pictures of it but also for it’s mere beauty and detail.  The mural is the work of mystery men who in broad daylight posed as construction workers wearing hard hats to put up their masterpiece. 

Whether the mural will stay is in question.  It’s religious nature and defacing public property have some calling for it to be removed.  While others see the “Save the Ocean” piece as something that fits right in to the art community of Encinitas. 

I hope before city officials make their decision, they let Our Lady of Guadalupe ride the wave for a few more sunsets.

The Aflac Duck has found his voice!  Gilbert Gottfried was given the boot as the spokesperson after making some insensitive comments about the victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.  The firing of Gottfried was controversial, after all we are all familiar with the humor that he brings.  However, with 75% of Aflacs revenue coming from Japan, the company couldn’t take any chances.  Meet Daniel McKeague, a sales manager and dad of 3 out of Minnesota.  He beat out 12,500 competitors in a contest run by the reinsurance company.  Daniel McKeague is not a celebrity but Aflac executives agree he has the voice range to bring the famous duck back to life.  Congrats Daniel McKeague on this new career venture!

Today, April 22nd 2011 is Earth Day.  It was first conceived by Sen. Nelson of Wisconsin and is now observed by 175 countries.  It is the 3rd behind Christmas and Halloween in activities, celebration and awareness in schools.  So it’s pretty obvious that this modern environmentalist movement carries some weight. 

In honor of Mother Earth here are some fun facts about it:

1.)Earth is the only planet in our solar system known to harbor life.

2.)Oceans cover almost 70% of the planet’s surface.

3.)The warmest sea in the world is the Red Sea which ranges from 68 to 87.8 degrees.

4.)All of the planets are named after Greek and Roman gods and goddesses except for Earth which is an English/German world meaning the ground.

5.)Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth it’s around 29,029 feet high and grows about 4 mm each year due to plate tectonics.

And here is what we can do to make it a clean, friendly place to live..Live Green:

1.)Recycle 1 aluminum can = save energy to watch TV for 3 hours.

2.)More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil.  All of the wrappers are recyclable!

3.)Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.

4.)Walk or bike when you can.

5.)Instead of bottled water, use re-usable water bottles.

In honor of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s pending April 29th nuptials, I thought it would be fitting for this weeks Wearable Wednesday to be about the royal couple.  They are young and hip with occasional fashion missteps.  But, overall they both dress dapper.
